What is NLP?

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is used for personal development in all aspects of our lives as well as for achieving success in business. It is the practice of understanding how people organise their thinking, feeling, language and behaviour and the consequences of their actions.  NLP was developed by Richard Bandler and John Grinder, who believed it was possible to identify the patterns of thoughts and behaviours of successful individuals and to teach them to others. A key element of NLP is that we form our unique internal mental map of the world as a product of the way we filter and perceive information absorbed through our five senses from the world around us. As we have more experiences and interactions, our map changes to fit with what we believe.

NLP is the study of excellent communication – both with yourself and with others which enables your unconscious mind to finally understand what you actually want out of life. It is the study and application of perceptual, behavioural, and communication techniques to make it easier for people to change their thoughts, actions and attitudes with a methodology of knowing how to achieve your goals and get results.

Understanding NLP and how we can apply it to others as well as ourselves is like learning how to become fluent in the language of your mind with a fresh new user’s manual for the brain. The methodology helps us develop a set of tools and techniques that bring new insight and perspective from within ourselves. This is especially effective in identifying necessary changes to our thoughts and behavior patterns that have not proven beneficial in the past and have possibly been blocking healing and success.

NLP is also the study of excellent communication – both with yourself and with others which enables your unconscious mind to finally understand what you actually want out of life. It is the study and application of perceptual, behavioural, and communication techniques to make it easier for people to change their thoughts, actions and attitude with a methodology of knowing how to achieve your goals and get results.

Neuro – Each of us has established our own unique mental filtering system for processing the millions of bits of data being absorbed through our senses. Our first mental map of the world is made up of internal images, sounds, tactile awareness, internal sensations, tastes and smells that form as result of the filtering process that is constantly at work in our minds.

Linguistic – We then assign our own personal meaning to all the bits of information we receive from the world around us. We then make sense of it all by applying language to the internal images, sounds and feelings, tastes and smells which forms our everyday conscious awareness.

Programming – Our behavioural responses (thoughts and actions) are what occurs because of the neurological filtering processes and the linguistic map that we develop. So in practical terms, we programme our own unique perspective on the world around us and what we need to do to survive in it. Each time we get new information, we process it and decide how it fits with what we already know.
